With myriad of black hats (crackers) and their nefarious deeds, our systems can no longer have full privacy. Gary McKinnon, widely known as “Solo”, is said to have made the record of biggest military computer hack of all time. He admitted that he hacked the United States and NASA computers over 97 times in a period of 13 months.  “Your system is crap!”- He posted on the military website. He is accused of loss of over $700,000 by the military.

But hackers wouldn’t have existed without crackers. Hackers are persons with technical knowledge. Ankit Fadia, an Indian security consultant, gained his popularity as a hacker after publishing his first book at the age of 15 on ethical hacking. His blog “Hacking Truth” is said to be the world’s second best hacking blog. At the age of 13, he hacked an Indian Magazine site and he claims to decode an encrypted message which was posted by Al-Qaeda after 9/11.

On the other hand, there are some other hackers who fight against the odds in the society. Anonymous is a group of hacktivist that are against expurgation and they generally target whopping MNC’s, governments and companies that they accuse of internet censorship.

Conclusion

Hacking is a way to explore for the inquisitive. So to protect our Pc’s, it is advisable to install a good firewall, a good antivirus program and have a good security policy.  While hacking is not a crime, it is considered a taboo. Hacking has always been a controversial issue but ultimately it depends on the way we want to look at it.
